BOWLING.

CLOSE OF SUMMER SEASON.. ARRANGEMENTS FOR WINTER. PRESS MATCH NEXT SATURDAY. (By TRUNDLER.) Bowlers were again in luck on Saturday. After six very cold days, some of which were windy and showery, it cleared up nicely on Friday, just in time to dry the greens and make the conditions very pleasant for Saturday, with not a breath of wind to disturb the play. This attracted a large gathering on most greens, especially where it was the closing day of the summer season, winter play to commence to-day. The parent club had already closed the summer season on the previous Saturday and it was intended to inaugurate the wmter season by playing a match against the Press and the Printers. However other functions appeared to make this week more suitable, and in another column will be seen the names of those who propose to take part. Any eligible players who have not yet sent in their names will be assured of a game if they leave a message with Mr. Walter Ure at once. On the other hand, if any discover during the week that they will be unable to play it will be a great convenience if they send word to that effect, either to Mr. Ure or to the secretary of the club, Mr. S. Coldicutt. Now that the days are so short, it is most essential to start at 1.30, and it will' be impossible to make up the rinks in time if some stay away without intimating this beforehand, or if some come along at the last minute when they are not expected. It looks as if the members of the club will need to attend in full force. On the following Saturday, May 13, all the delegates to the centre are invited to a game on the Hillsboro' green, and in connection with this match also it is most essential, to assure an early start, that those who intend to play shall send in their names at once to the secretary of the centre. There will be no difficulty over those who attend the meeting of delegates this evening, as their intentions can be ascertained in conjunction with the roll call, butit will spoil the draw if others attend without sending word, or send word without attending. Bowlers are reminded that any may attend this evening's meeting of the centre, but naturally only the delegates will be entitled to speak or vote. This is the most convenient meeting at which delegates can submit remits to go forward to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Bowling Council, which will be held in Dunedin during the second week in July. Whether by accident- or design, it happens that the International Bowling Board will again hold its annual meeting during the same week as our council, probably on the very same day, and this adds force to the suggestion that the latter should meet earlier each year, to allow time for cabling any instructions that may be decided upon at our council s meeting. The board meets during the International Games, and they are to be held during that week, in Wales this year, under the scheme of rotation between the four national associations. It is unlikely that Mr. J. E. Cornes (Mount Eden) and Mr. W. Perry (Carlton), who leave for England to-morrow, will be able to see these championships played, as they clash with the ceremonies in connection with the new Masonlc.headquaXrTin London, the £1,000,000 building which is to be opened by the Duke of Connaught. A few thousand people in Auckland will also . be . interested in another great function which tbe tourists, propose to attend, to.be held in. Brighton on Whit Monday, June 5. This is the Movable Conference of the Manchester Unify of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, and Mr. Perry will officially represent the Auckland District of the New Zealand Branch. The opening of the winter season will enable several clubs to resume their club challenge matches on Saturdays, and the inter-dub challenge matches will begin, as soon as the holders are free. The Edwin Stars are held by J. Ogilvie, A. J. Carson, H. Sykes, J. Gardiner (Otahuhu), who are encaged in club games for two more baturdays? but on May 20 they will be prepared to meet R. N. Melville (Devonport), followed by J. Miller (Mount Eden) The Denison Pins are at Ponsonby, held by P. Letham, J. Rolfe, A. Parsons, A. J. Letham, and they are quite ready to meet J. Thomas (Mount Albert), followed by J. Wright (Epsom). Henderson will hold an open tournament on Wednesday, and Grey Lynn on Wednesday of next week. On the afternoono of May 13 and 20 Mount Eden will hold a two-Saturday rink tournament. ' A well-known bowler from Lyall Bay, Wellington, Mr. L". M. Naylor, is on a, visit to Auckland, and last week he had the misfortune to strike what was probably the worst weather ever known in Auckland during April. However, he has heard that it was even worse at the capital, so he was glad to find it quite fine on Saturday for a game. Accompanied by two members of his club, Messrs. W. N. Mcintosh and J. B. Lawrie, he visited Onehunga, where they were heartily welcomed by the club president, Mr. E. J. Gatland, who specially referred to the pleasure of meeting the youngest son of the late Mr. W. N. Mcintosh, one of the founders of the club. Lou Naylor is best known to Auckland bowlers as slap of the Lyall Bay rink who won the Dominion championship last January, when they won a great final by 22 to 18, against Gladding, Pascoe, Truscott, Jenkin (Carlton), after having already given them a loss in the fourth round. Those who saw him playing on Saturday for the first time were not surprised at his numerous victories, for he has cultivated a model delivery, and appears to have exactly the temperament to encourage the pest enorts from his team, incidentally getting, another win on Saturday, although against the club champion. Naylor did not qualify in Auckland two years ago, but six years ago he jumped to the front as skip of the onlyrink in the whole 170 who got through the section play without a loss. He also figured prominently in the Australian carnival in Brisbane two years ago. His rink qualified, but was put qnt m -the eecond round of post-section play by tne ultimate winners. It was unfortunate that of the five Onehunga members who accompanied him to Brisbane only one was present to meet him on Saturday, A. Moore, formerly of Devonport, so they put him in the team. H. A. Robertson was at Ellerslie, where he won on the 22nd head. G. A. McKendrick was in Wellington, &. V. Sutherland and S. H. Davenport were otherwise engaged. Mr. J. B, Lawrie is not so well known here, but in his own citv he helped very considerably in bis club pretty well sweemng the board during the past season. His best contribution was as skip of the winning rink in the Christmas tournament. Other visitors to Auckland are MB. i». Ardell, Hataitai Club, Wellington; Mr. J. W Lowrv, Kelburn Club, formerly of Carlton; Mr. C. E. Wilson Cashmere Club, Christclmrch: and Mr. A. H. Benefield, St. John's, Wanganui. PRESS AND PRINTERS.
