GLUT OF MEAT.
ON BRITISH MARKET. Heavy Dominion Shipments In Last Quarter. BEEF, MUTTON AND LAMB. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 12 noon.) LONDON, April 27. The President of the Board of Trade, Mr. Walter Runciman, in answer to a question in the House of Commons, admitted 'that Britain's imports of beef, mutton and lamb in the past quarter had exceeded those in the first quarter of 1932 by 70,000 cwt. This, he said, was largely due to heavy arrivals of Australian and New Zealand mutton and lamb. The undertakings of those Dominions to limit their shipments applied to 1933 as a whole, not to quarterly restrictions under the Ottawa agreements, which began on January 1. Besides that there was a voluntary agreement to reduce chilled beef exports to Britain for the first quarter of 1033 by 10 per cent of the total admissible under tlie Ottawa agreements.
Mr. Runciman, speaking later at a British Chamber of Commerce dinner, said the Danish and other trade agreements did not exhaust Britain's ability to use the tariff weapon to reduce duties. England recognised, as a creditor, that international payments must be made for goods and services. AngloAmerican collaboration was based 011 the recognition of this fact.
