RESEARCH ECONOMY.
The Government is again on the warpath with economy measures; some, I venture, are unwise, such as the withdrawing of financial support from the Cawthron Institute, Nelson, and. the Massey College, Palmerston North. A few days back someone mentioned that New Zealand's debt, was £4 per acre; that is not quite the correct way to put it; New Zealand's debt should be worked out per acre of land in cultivation, as we are an agricultural country. Anyone who cares to work this out will see that the debt per acre of land in cultivation in New Zealand is £10 per acre, that is taking the average of good and poor land, which means that very good fand carries a debt of about £20 per acre. What a load! This, I think, is one of the gfeatfest reasons for doing all possible to advance the woj-k at Palmerston North and Cawthron Institute, rather than by restricting it. ERIC W. YATES.
