PRICES AT WESTFIELD. LAMBS AT LATE RATES. As the holiday on Anzac Day interfered with train arrangements the weekly sale at Westfield was held yesterday instead of Wednesday. There was a large entry of fat cattle, totalling about SOO head, and for prime quality recent rates were maintained. but plain and unfinished sorts were hard to quit. Calves were 111 good demand and realised improved prices. bheep and lambs were yarded in average numbers, and showed little change. Ihere was a good sale for pigs. Alfred Buckland and Sons, Limited, report on the sale as follows:— Beef.—"-We penned fat cattle to the number of 328, as against 208 head at last week's sale, comprising 209 steers and US cows and i heifers. The demand was steady with values on a par with last week. Extra choice ox sold to 20/ per 1001b; choice and prime ox,. 17/ to 19/; secondary and plain ox, 14/ to 16/; prime young cow and heifer beef, 13/ to 1 o/; ordinary cow beef, 9/ to 12/; extra heavy prime steers ranged in price from £7 12/ti to £8 5/, for cattle from Mr. H. E. Beed, Waerenga, the truck averaging £7 17/1; heavy prime steers, £7 to £7 10/; lighter prime steers, £5 10/ to £6 15/; light prime steers, £4 5/ to £5 7/6; small and unfinished steers, £2 10/ to £4; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £5 to £6; heavy prime cows and heifers. £2 15/ to £4; other killable cows, £1 10/ to £2 7,6. Sheep.—Sheep were yarded in increased numbers, and values for wethers were on a par with those ruling last week, while ewes were slightly easier. A total of 1444 sheep was sold. Extra heavy prime wethers made from 16/6 to 17/3; heavj prime wethers, 15/ to 16/3; medium to heavy prime wethers. 14/ to 14/9; light to medium prime wethers, 12/9 to 13/0; unfinished wethers, 10/ to 12/6; extra heavy prime young ewes, 10/ to 10/9; heavy prime ewes, 8/6 to 9/9; lighter prime ewes, 7/9 to 8/3; other killable ewes, 6/3 to 7/. Lambs.—Lambs were penned in increased numbers, and sold freely at ;ate quotations. Bunners made £1 8/ to £3 5/ for a particularly prime Hereford heifer from T* u ' huia; heavy vealers, £1 15/ to • medium, £1 10/ to £1 14/; light, £1 5/ to £1 8/; small, 16/ to £1 2/; rough and bucket-fed, 9/ to 14/; bobby calves, 2/ to 0/ (a total of 163 calves was sold). Pigs—We had an average offering of fat pigs. Bidding was keen and our quotations show prices slightly better for all classes. Lambs.—Lambs were penned in average numbers, and sold at late quotations. Prime lambs made from 10/ to 14/6; email and forward, 7/6 to 9/9; unfinished, 5/ to 7/3. Pigs.—Pigs were penned in average numbers. Values were firm on late quotations and in a few instances for porkers showed improved values. Choppers sold from 15/ to £2 1/: heavy and medium baconers, £2 to £2 12/: light baconers and heavy porkers, £1 10/ to £1 18/; medium porkers and light porkers, IS/ to £1 8/. There was no demand for a large yarding of store pigs, values for which suffered a considerable drop. Large stores made from 8/ to 12/; slips, 4/ to 7/; weaners, 2/ to 8/. Calves.—A medium yarding of calves met with a good sale and sold at improved values. Runners made from £1 10/ to £2 12/; heavy vealers, £1 16/ to £2 4/; medium, £1 10/ to £1 -14/; light, £1 to £1 8/; smaller, 10/ to 18/; small and fresh dropped, 3/ to 8/; rough calves, 4/ to 8/. THE ADDINGTON MARKET. FAT LAMBS FIRM. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. Features of the weekly stock market at Addington to-day were an exceptionally heavy entry of fat cattle and a short supply of fat sheep. The cattle entry was easily the largest for the year. Store Sheep.—A small entry met with a very slack sale and there were many passings. Lambs barely maintained late rates. Medium mixed sex lambs_ made up to 6/1; average, 3/ to 5/; inferior, to 2/1; good crossbred ewe lambs, to 7/11; medium, to 6/3; medium two-tooth ewes, to 12/; medium sound mouth ewes, 6/ to 8/; ordinary, 4/ to 5/9; forward halfbred wethers, 7/6 to 8/10. Fat Lambs. —The entry was 3500 and there was a firm sale at late rates. Export buyers operated to the latest schedule. Extra prime heavy lambs realised up to 17/7; prime heavy, 13/6 to 15/; medium weight, 11/ to 13/; lkcht, 8/6 to 10/6. Fat Sheep.—An entry of 4000 met with a keen demand as a result of the shortage of supply. Wethers were firm at late rates. Values for ewes advanced 1/ to 1/6 a head. Extra prime heavy wethers sold up to 17/10; prime heavy, 15/ to 16/6; medium weight, 12/6 to 14/6; ordinary, 10/6 to 12/; light, to 10/; show ewes, to 15/1; extra prime, to 13/4; prime, 10/6 to 11/9; medium weight, 8/ to 10/; ordinary, to 7/6. Fat Cattle.—The entry of 545 head was representative of the West Coast, Otago and Marlborough, as well as Canterbury, and there were some outstanding lines of steers. Best beef maintained late rates in an irregular sale, but other sorts were difficult to quit. Best beef sold to 21/ per 1001b; good prime, 17/ to 20/; heavy-weight and medium, 14/6 to 17/; good heifer, 15/ to 18/; good cow, 13/ to 16/. Fat Pigs.—The entry was large and competition was fair. Choppers made 30/ to £4 16/; baconers, 37/6 to 47/6; heavy, 52/6 to 69/6 (average price per lb, 3%d to 4 1 /idj; porkers, 23/6 to 27/6; heavy, 30/ to 35/6 (average price per lb 4 1 / ad to sd).
