"SACRILEGE."
"ANZAC" AS A TRADE NAME.
AUSTRALIAN PROTEST,
(Prom Our Own Correspondent.)
SYDNEY, April 22,
The other night at a meeting of the Returned Soldiers' League at Lidcombe, a suburb about ten miles from Sydney, a member asked for the assistance of the league in a matter which seemed to him to concern them all. A conference of farmers and other primary producers was held recently at Casino, in the Northern District, 500 miles from Sydney, and at this gathering it was proposed that a certain article of produce should be marketed under the trade name "Anzac."
When this matter was brought up at the R.S.A. meeting at Lidcombe, strong disapproval was expressed by the members, and the president evidently had the meeting with him when he denounced the Casino proposal as "sacrilege." A resolution was carried requesting the official head of the league to make strong representations to the Australian and New Zealand Governments to prevent the word "Anzac" being used as a trade name.
There is no doubt that public opinion is strongly behind the R.S. leagues here on this question, for very obvious reasons, and the returned men here can be quite sure that'their protest will receive all the sympathy and support that it needs in New Zealand.
