Morning Play at Middlemore.— McCrystal's Remarkable Nine

Holes.

The Auckland provincial golf championship was commenced at Middlemore this morning. There was a field of 86 players to take part in the two qualifying rounds in the morning's play. The sensation o£ the first qualifying round was provided by R. R. McOrjstal (Titirangi), wlu laid the loundatioii foi a fine card by making the outward journey in 34-a score that has never been bettered in match play on the course. Coming h°" lc lie was not so consistent, and sixes at the sixteenth and eighteenth holes (bogey 4) marred his performance. He took threes at the first two holes (bogey 4 and o i espectively), and lie iailed at only one hole in the following seven, the third, where he took five to get bogey figures oi better. MeChrystal made amends for his lapse with a four at the fifth hole, and capped off his performance with " birdies at the eingth. and ninth. His two lapses on the home journey prevented him getting scratch figures or better for the round. B. H. Menzies (Auckland), who won the title two years ago, shared honours with MeChrystal for the best card of the morning. He had threes at the sixth and eighth holes (bogey 4), which were useful on the trip, which he covered in 38. A five at the seventh was bad, but he played consistently over the latter part of the being home in 38, with a total of 76. B. M. Silk (plus 1, Wanganui)), who with D. J. Smith (Akarana) lias the lowest handicap of the field, was playing his second shots indifferently, and frequently getting into bunkers. However, he retrieved most of the mistakes well, and finished with 78.

Smith found trouble on the green, frequently taking three putts. His card was

80. Last season's club champion, R. D. Horton, showed good form, and his round of 79 was full of merit.

The Whangarei player, H. F. Buckley, played a sterling round for a visitor and a 4 handicap player. His card was 79. He had a seven at the fourth hole, but a great run of fours from the eighth. That consistent medal player W. S. Ralph (Auckland) returned a card of 80. He was knocking at the door for a good performance, but boldness on the green cost him an extra stroke.

The title-holder, 11. D. Brinsden (Titihad one bad hole at the seventh (bogey 3), and took seven. Under the circumstances his round of 80 was right up to the standard of a scratch player.
