SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The members of the Mount Roskill, Tennis Club gave a progressive tournament on .Wednesday last. Local clubs were well represented, and the prizewinners were Mrs. W. Cron and Mrs. F. Paul.

An enjoyable afternoon was spent in Knox Home 011 Tuesday last, when Mrs. E. L. Fraser, of the Victoria League, and Mrs. Huntly entertained the inmates in the wards and on the verandahs with musical selections on the auto-harp, also Songs, recitations and other forms of amusement, which were greatly appreciated by all.

The officers for the ensuing year are: President, Mr. D. B. Squire; vice-president, Mr. J. H. Reich; committee, Mrs. W. Williams, Misses Bentley, O. Jewell, Messrs. W. S. Garrett, J. Payne, and C. Walker; secretary, Miss V. Bailey.

The first social evening of the year held by, Court Maid Marian, the ladies' branch of the A.0.F., took place in the Foresters' Hall, Albert Street, on Monday last. Courts Edith Cavell, Nil Desperandum, Balmoral, Victoria, Ellrslie, Henderson and City of Auckland were represented, and at the preceding meeting were welcomed by the C.R., Sister Stych. Dancing and cards were enjoyed, and a delightful competition was won by Miss Draffin and Mr. Scott. Sister Leece supplied the music, assister by Bro. White.

The monthly meeting of the Mount Eden junior branch of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary was held last Tuesday evening at the residence of Mrs. Hooton, Pencarrow Avenue, Mount Eden. Tho?e present were: Mrs. Hooton (president), Miss L. Marks (secretary), Mrs. Tutt and Misses Abbot, J. Mitchell, D. Lamb, K. Worn, L. SherrifF, A. Read, L. Stone, M. Walker, M. Macferson, P. Cadnian, J. Miles and S. Lockington. The members reported having spent a busy month visiting at private homes and at the Hospital, and making patchwork quilts and many liseful garments. Among other things a dance has been suggested for May. After the general business was discussed, Mrs. Tutt, of the League of Mothers, gave those present a short address on the dignity of voung womanhood. * " * # # «■

The opening night of the musical circle took place in the Overseas Club rooms,- Queen's Arcade, last evening, with a splendid attendance of members. Madame Ailcen Johns, the convener, welcomed the members and their guests. The opening, number was a pianoforte duo, "Barcarolle. and Night of Love" (Rachmaninoff), by Miss Renee Satehwell and Mrs. Gordon Robertson, followed by two vocal solos, "Queen Mary's Song" (Elgar) and Will-o'-the-Wisp" (Spross), by Miss Kay Christie. Elocutionary items, "The Explorer" (Kipling) and "King Henry the Fifth's Speech," were rendered by Mr. Dennis Johns; and in conclusion Mr. Barry Coney sang a group of four modern numbers. "The Carpet"' (•Sanderson). "Mariska" (Korbav), "What a Wonderful World" (Lohr), and "The Bold Unbiddable Child" (Stanford). A dainty supper was served in the dining room at the close of -the evening.

I An enjoyable time was spent last ! Thursday in St. Columba Hall, Grey Lvnn, when several friends of Miss Sarah O'Brien gave her a gift evening. Many useful gifts were received. Mrs. Leece and Mr. John Taylor rendered lively dance music. On the platform card tables were arranged for those who wished to play. During the evening Mr. Taylor gave two cornet solos. There was a large attendance at the weekly meeting of the Women's Progress Club, which was held in the Higher Thought Temple on Wednesday afternoon. The speaker was Professor James Adams, 8.D., who gave a talk on "The faith that never fails." The necessity for an optimistic and confident outlook was stressed as a solution for overcoming the present difficult financial crisis. * » * ♦ I The monthly meeting of the Auckland branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Fanners' Union was held 111 the Farmers' Trading Co. board room on Wednesday, April 12. Mrs. J. T. F. Mitchell presided over the meeting. Mrs. Edward Allen, chairwoman of the exchange shop committee, reported very favourably on the business done during the two weeks that the shop had been in existence, and expressed confidence in its future development. Mrs. Hoey was elected convener of the circle entrusted with the visiting of the sick. Mr. J. P. Kalauglier and Mr. O'Donnell, vicepresident and sccretaT-y of the A. and P. Association, addressed the members on the proposed women's division court in the forthcoming Winter Exhibition. Mr. O'Donnell also touched on the remarkable work of the Country Women's Association of New South Wales, which he had been much interested to see during a recent visit, when he was agreeably impressed with the business-like manner in which their conference was conducted. It was decided to send any donations of clothing to the central garment depot, c/o Mrs. J. C. Sinclair, Wormsley Road, via Otahuhu, for distribution.

The members and friends of the Neville Carlsen Revue Company, who give the entire proceeds to charity, assembled in the pavilion of the Rocky Nook Bowling Club on Tuesday evening, the occasion being the annual "Green Room" evening of the troupe. During the many years of charitable work this organisation has made many friends, and the building was fully taxed to accommodate the many present. Dancing, games and items by past and present members were given. The following contributed items: Mrs. J. F. Holt (piano), Misses Betty Lelean (fancy dance), Melva Marchant (song and dance), Willa Katterns and Mavis Davidson (fancy dancc), Joy Watts (song), Joyce Coleman (song and dance), Dcbby Kingston, June Brcere and Joyce Trainer (song and dance trio), Mavis Reillv and Tessie Pell (son? and dance duo),' Mr. Neville Carlsen (humorous reminiscences), and Master Maurice Stitt (elocution). Ernest Parkinson and Son contributed instrumental selections. Mrs. Neville C'arlsenwas the hostess, and received the guests in a gown of cerise silk. Among those present were: Mesd&mes Hy.
