DEATH OF HARES.

A WAIHI MYSTERY.

COURSING- MEET POSTPONED.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)'

WAIHI, this day.

Mystery surrounds the sudden appearance of an unknown sickness amongst the hares owned by the Waild Coursing Club. The malady has already resulted in the death of three hares, and the majority of the remainder are showing symptoms of poisoning. It is expected that further deaths will occur within a short period. The question whether the death of the hares was caused by the animals eating some noxious growth or by the operation of some other unknown means cannot at the present time be cleared up. A visit by officials yesterday to the club's Plumpton, which is situated on the eastern outskirts of the town, disclosed the trouble. With a view to determining the nature of the disease the body of one of the dead hares has been forwarded to the Government pathologist for examination. 1 Complete arrangements had been made for the inaugural meeting of the club on Easter Monday, and keen disappointment was expressed in the town this morning when it was found necessary to postpone the fixture. The club !was formed in June last, £160 being raised by public subscription. Twentysix hares were available for the meeting'. Sixty club members owned dogs, and the programme provided for 16 maiden and 16 all-aged stakes.
