"A GREAT FUTURE."
SMALL FARMS SCHEME.
-ADMINISTRATION THE KEY.
Success for the small farms plan, provided the legislation is wisely and sympathetically administered, was predicted by Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, M.P. for Waitomo, in an interview in Auckland this morning. Mr. Broadfoot said that as a result of his inspections during the past month in the northern King Country district he had been greatly impressed with the progress, made by those unemployed who had been placed on the one-family farms or had been absorbed under the share-milking scheme. The results of a will to work were clearly in evidence. The new settlers had started without financc, but they had the desire to succeed, which was their most valuable asset. When one realised the success attained by the developmental policy of the Minister of Native Affairs, Sir Apirana Ngata, one could not escape the conclusion that with the material available and the right leadership offering, that success could be equalled and excelled by the pakeha. There was a tremendous future for the Small Farms Act, but only if its provisions were wisely and sympathetically administered, Mr. Broadfoot added. Leadership was essential, and the Crown should be sure to provide the finance for both land development and purchase of sptock. That would give it 100 per cent icontrol and enable its field officers not only to direct the developmental policy of the farm, but as well to lay down, where necessary, the farming plans from year to year.
