ROTORUA, this day.
Hori Man was charged in the Police Court to-day with carrying on the business of a bookmaker. He pleaded guilty. The circumstances were that on February 11, the first day of the Rotorua races, Mau took two bets oh Alloy and Bambury and Speedmint and Bambury. Both bets were admitted, and no trouble had been given the police, who said that Man was no welsher.
Mr. S. L. Piaterson, S.M., said Mau had already suffered heavy fines, but these had not deterred him from carrying on business as a bookmaker in defiance of the law. He must have found it profitable or he would not carry on. The - Court must increase the penalty. A fine of £250 was imposed, in default six months' imprisonment. A month wag allowed in which to pay.
