BOROUGH SERVICES.

STATUTORY HALF HOLIDAY.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) TAURANGA, this day.

The electricity committee reported that on April 3 a deputation from the Power Board waited on the committee with the request that in consequence of the reduction in interest charges the board be allowed some concession, which would be passed on to consumers. The committee considered the request and recommended that the council allow 7} per cent discount as from April 1, provided the Power Board was willing to extend the life of the present agreement by five years.

A communication was read at the meeting from Mr. T. Moncur forwarding a petition bearing 284 signatures requesting, the council to hold a poll to define a day for the statutory half holiday.

The Mayor stated that a poll could be taken on May 3, the date of the municipal election.

Mr. Wallace contended that as the petition was not in the hands of the town clerk till April 3 the necessary month's notice had not been given and ho considered that the petition was out of order.

The Mayor pointed out that April 2 was a Sunday. He ruled that a poll be taken on May 3 and that the. borough solicitor's opinion be taken on the general legality of the requisition.
