WINTER RELIEF.

QUICK RESPONSE.

GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S FUND.

CHEQUE FROM AUSTRALIA.

The initial response to the GovernorGeneral's Winter Belief Fund has been most promising. In addition to promises to assist the appeal by way of finance, numerous undertakings have been received to supply live stock and other foodstuffs, donations of which, it will be remembered, Ills Excellency invited when issuing his appeal.

Although the text of the GovernorGeneral's message was broadcast as recently a« Sunday, the mail bag received at Government House yesterday was exceptionally heavy, and up to the time of departure from Auckland for the Pacific Islands this afternoon, his Excellency was busily engaged in acknowledging offers of assistance. To date something like 500 letters and telegrams conveying promises of gifts in cash or in kind have been received.

One interesting donation is a cheque of £50 from an Australian visitor, who wishes to remain anonymous. The gift was forwarded, as the donor expressed it, in recognition of the kindness he had received from New Zealand people during a holiday in the Dominion.
