SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A card afternoon was held by the Papatoetoe branch of the Plunket Society in the Renown Hall, Papatoetoe, yesterday. There were 70 tables of players. The winners were: —Bridge, Mrs. W. Cutforth; and five hundred, Miss Runciman. Afternoon tea was arranged by Mrs. F. E. Carr. * *• * *

The fortnightly card and social evening of the White Ensign Social Club was held at the residence of Mrs. W. Horscroft, Selwyn Street, Onehunga, on Saturday evening. ' The hostess received her guests wearing flame satin beautc. The prizes were won by Mrs. C. Padley and Mr. T. Jefferies. Among those present were: Mesdames S. J. Nash, C. Padley, T. Jefferies, D Gill, Russell Smith, S. Norbury, H. Davics, A. D. Lee, RSbinson, Temperton, A. Brain, Greenland, Baker, Halford.

An enjoyable evening was spent on Thursday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cudby, Fowlds Avenue, Mount Albert, in honour of Miss Pat Wynyard. Musical items were rendered by Miss Wynyard and Mr. Culley, with Mr. L. Steinbeck at the piano; also an exhibition in tap dancing was given ' by Mr. B. Churchill. Dancing and games occupied the greater part of the evening. A presentation was then made to Miss Wynyard. Among those present were: Mesdames Culley, Bryce, Bieske, Powell, Hazard, Misses Cleaver, Wyuyard, Glasgow, Chacman, Mills, Chatvvin, Capel, Draffin, McAdam, Warren, Thompson, Glover, Standish, Culley, Ashley.

A successful garden fete was held on Friday last at Mrs. Hunter's residence, St. George's Road, Avondale, in aid of tho Avondale Women's Unemployed Association. It was opened by the patron of the -association, Mrs. Fishef, who was presented with a bouquet of flowers in the club's colours of pink and green by little June Mitchell. Tho stallholders were: Produce, Mesdarnes Weir and Adams; cake, Mrs. Mitchell; sweets, Mesdanies Wright and Jones;- fancy goods, Mrs. Dixon; afternoon tea, Mesdarnes Harrison and Brown; baby show, under 12 months, Baby Russell 1, Baby Woodcock 2; over 12 months, Baby King; children's fancy dress, Beulah Dixon 1, Eileen Adams 2, Isabel Dean 3.

On Saturday evening the Taupiri Bowling Club held a card evening in the Taupiri Hall, progressive "500" being played. The occasion was to mark the close of the bowling season. Tlie ladies' first prize went to Mrs. S. J. Wilson, and the gentlemen's to Mr. E. P. Tapper, while the ladies' and gentlemen's consolation prizes were won by Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Sowman respectively. Among the ladies present were: Mesdames S. Stanley, R. E. Hunter, S. J. Wilson, A. J. Gibb, G. Horwood, N. Wilson, F. West, F. R. Catley, E. Sowman, Bentley, W. Waring, J. Murpliy, J. Wilson, Johnson, A. Shepherd, 'H. Hewitt, J. Bruce, Misses G. A. Jones, J. Sowman, N. Wilson, V. Shepherd, A. Waring, J. Stanley.

Mrs. Richardson, a winner in the recent Auckland tournament, was the guest of honour at a pleasant afternoon given by the members of the Mont Le Grand Croquet- Club. The president of the club, Mrs. Peckham, presented Mrs. Richardson with two silver spoons, her initials engraved thereon, as a small memento in honour of her success. Mrs. Richardson was also winner of a Yankee tournament held on the club's lawns, and was tlie recipient of a dainty handbag donated for tlie event by Mrs. Peckham. Progressive croquet was played, the winners being:—A, Mrs. Carter; B, Mrs. Dupree; consolation, Mesdames Ivinkley and Richardson. A delightful tea was served in the pavilion, and the guest of honour thanked her fellowmembers in a brief and happy speech. *.# * *

Another of the old-time dances was held last Saturday evening at the Public Hall, Otahuhu, where the Otahuhu Old Time Dance Club continued the series. The old "favourites of 50 years ago still received encores, and the orchestra was kept busy until midnight, a twilight waltz finishing a' pleasant evening. There were two Monte Carlo waltzes, the first being won by Miss and Mr. Ecclcs, and the second by Miss Forward and Mr. Eccles. Supper was served during the interval by Mesdames Dixon, Tagart, Mark wick and Parker, and extras were played by Miss M. Tucker. Amongst those present were: Mesdames Craig, Stokes, Markwick, Parker, Tagart, Whittle, Arnold, Kniglit, Eccles, Lindner, Hedges, Parker, Dixon, Boyd, Hadficld, Taylor, Page, Misses Tucker, Rule, P. Cunningham, C. Cunningham, Martin, Barry, Kelly, Higliam, M. Whittle,' Tlioms, Ilickson, Olsen, Besman, E. Craig, McConigale, Taylor, Stewart, Griffith, Mouton, G. Billington, C. Billington, Ryan, Knight, P. Miller, M. Miller, Hadficld, Petrie, R. Forward, H. Eccles, Gardiner, Knight, Ross, I. Eccles, B. Forward, Stuart, Parker.

An At Home to members of the Ponsonby Croquet Club was given by the president, Mrs. R. H. Horsley, on Saturday, at Victoria Park. Mrs. Horsley received her guests in a frock of black crepe fleuri and black and white pandan hat. Progressive croquet was played, the prize-winners being Mesdames Hardley, Aitchison, Lucina, Fraser Smith and Miss Burton. During the afternoon tea adjournment Mrs. Horsley expressed her pleasure at* so many being present, and especially welcomed Mrs. Wetherilt, a life member and one of the club's oldest supporters, and Mrs. E. A. Oswald, vice-president of the New Zealand Croquet Council. Mrs. W. Evans responded on . behalf of the members and lion, members. In reply, Mrs. Oswald congratulated the club on their fine lawns, and mentioned an outstanding event in croquet, that of the champion of champions and silver button tournament which is to take place this month. Glorious weather prevailed, and the decorations of the table and pavilion were greatly admired. Among those present were: Mesdames Wetherilt, Oswald, Healey, Evans, Crowe, Snedden, Green, Gallaher, Dixon, Pardington, E. Smith, Worsfold, Thompson, Graham, Foster, Downes, Lonergan, Gall, Smith, Hodge, Rowbottom, Hardley, Hilton, Torrance, Lucena, Holland, Kirk, F. Smith, Chapman, Aitchison, Frieberg, McKenzie, Misses Burton, Turkington, Morey, ■Veale, Barber, Horsier, Winks, Brown, Aitchison.

An enjoyable bridge party was held on Saturday evening at the home of Mrs. Asliton Spencer, Sydenham_ Avenue, Mount Eden, in honour of Miss Eileen Fearnley. Mrs. Spence received tho guests wearing cigar brown lace, and Miss Fearnley was in floral taffeta. Amongst those present were: Mesdames J. T. Fearnley, C. F. Wren, J. W. Baxter, Misses G. Smith, Phyl Peet, K. Knott, R. Pagni, K. Ellis, M. Hodge and R. McGee.
