YOUTH IN NORTH AUCKLAND.
SWEPT OFF HORSE'S BACK.

The inquest into the death of John Gordon Ellcry, the . youth who was drowned when crossing the Ngunguru Ford, opened before.Mr- H. C. Hemphill, coroner, at the Whangarei Courthouse yesterday. A farmer of Horahora, Robert McKenzie Douglas, gave evidence of identification. At 10 o'clock on Sunday, he said, Ellery, who was then in best of health, left on horseback to spend the day at Ngunguru. He was to return by milking time, the tide was suitable. It was a common practice to cross the river at the ford. Deceased was quite a good rider. When he left the home he we* wearing a heavy oilskin and farm boots #
Mr. John Gordon Ellery, of Sandringham, Auckland, said that his son attained the age of 18 last December. He had been away from home for three years. The inquest was then adjourned. The inquest was concluded this afternoon. The action of Ralph Wellington in attempting a rescue was highly commended by the coroner, who returned a verdict that deceased met his death by drowning, when attempting to cross Ngunguru River on horseback.
