The Papatoetoe Welfare League, at a meeting over which Mr. S. J. E. Closey presided, discussed a scheme for beautifying the Papatoetoe railway station, and decided to seek the permission of the Railway Department to commence the work. • A committee was set up to make arrangements for a meeting of those interested to discuss the organising of a Women's Institute in the district. A discussion took place on the embargo on silver currency. The chairman pointed out that in order further to reduce the loss to th'e State through the exportation of New Zealand's silver currency, a note issue of 5/ and 10/ shbuld be made by the Government. It was decided to place before the Prime Minister, the Minister of Finance, and the local member the following motion: "That in view of the difficulty which is being experienced in enforcing the embargo on silver exportations. a paper substitute of, say, 10/ and 5/ nomination be issued by the State as a currency medium."
