ROWING.

AUCKLAND CLUB. The Auckland Rowing Club season was officially closed on Saturday with the president's day At Home. Although the weather conditions were fine the attendance of friends and supporters was consequently interfered with owing to the north-easterly wind. The Auckland Rowing Association was represented by Mr. H. C. Norden, chairman, the Wanganui Rowing Club by Messrs. F, M. Spurdle and J. Quin, and the sister clubs of the province by delegates. Mr. G. Hogan, president, welcomed the visitors, and, while regretting the unpleasant conditions of the waterfront owing to the wind, enlightened the visitors with the splendid record achieved by the club, mentioning in particular the winning of the New Zealand championship fours, the blue ribbon of the Dominion's rowing. Mr. Hogan also complimented the interprovincial eight-oar crew upon its great performance in rowing second to the champions, Otago. Messrs. F. M. Spurdle and J. Quin also spoke, and on behalf of Wanganui extended congratulations to the club upon its success at the New Zealand championships. Both speakers struck a note of advice to the members that was greatly appreciated. Owing to rough water conditions it was impossible to row the trial fours for the trophies donated by Mr. G. Hogan. The races will probably be decided next weekend. COMPLIMENTARY CONCERT. The members of the Auckland Rowing Club tendered the club's senior four, Messrs. S. Scott, C. Chamberlain, J. McComish, R. Porter, a smoke concert in the Scots Hall on Saturday night in honour of their victory in the New Zealand senior fours championship. Air. Geo. Hogan, president, occupied the chair and there was a large and representative attendance of the Auckland provincial clubs and many keen supporters of rowing.

Among the visitors were Mr. A. C., Norden, chairman of the Auckland Rowing Association, Prof. Maxwell Walker, Councillor J. Patterson and Mr. F. M. Spurdle (Wanganui). Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, and Mr. Ernest Davis. The chairman, in his opening remarks welcoming the crew, gave an interesting record of its performances. Prof. Maxwell Walker also eulogised the crew's achievement, mentioning that it was the first occasion in the club's history that the title had been won, and only the second time that an Auckland Harbour club had achieved the honour. The previous occasion was 25 years ago, when the Walteniata Boating Club's crew won the title. An interesting resume of the Waitemata crew was given by Mr. F. M. Spurdle when proposing the toast of that four. A splendid elocutionary and musical programme was contributed by Messrs. T. Harris, Dan. Flood, Alan Bacon, B. Andrews and J. Whelan.
