LORRY SMASH.

DRIVER IN LUCK.

ESCAPED ELECTROCUTION

TELEPHONE UNES BROKEN.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, this day.

A motor truck owned by the Ashburton Transport Company crashed into a telegraph post when carrying four tons of wool near Sockburn at midnight.

The post was broken off like a carrot, and when it fell it brought down and broke all the wires, stopping telegraphic communication with the south and. the West Coast. Communication was reestablished at six o'clock this morning with temporary wires, and permanent repairs will be completed to-night.

The back portion of the lorry was seriously damaged. The driver, Mr. W. Lamb, was uninjured, but was dazed. Had the lorry hit the next pole, which carries a 16,000-volt line, nothing could have save the driver from electrocution.
