TARIFF REVISION.

EFFECTS OF EXCHANGE,

BRITISH EXPORTERS' CASE.

Reference to the New Zealand exchange rate and to the impending tariff revision is made in a circular issued by the London Chamber of Commerce. The chamber notes that "it will be open to United Kingdom firms trading with New Zealand, to make representations to the New Zealand Government urging a review of the tariffs on particular commodities in which the firms arc especially interested. Such representations should be as complete as possible, and should give facts and figures showing the cost of economical and'efficient production in this country as compared with similar figures for production in New Zealand.

"Traders in this country (United Kingdom) will now be awaro of the effect of the alteration of the New Zealand exchange rate upon the importation of United Kingdom goods into New Zealand. It is probable that the level on certain tariffs in the past has been satisfactory to United Kingdom producers; but as one of the effects of the change in the New Zealand exchange rate is to alter the relative positions of United Kingdom and New Zealand producers, United Kingdom producers may not now under the new exchange rate have as full an opportunity of reasonable competition as they had before the exchange was altered. United Kingdom producers may, therefore, wish to take into consideration the effect of the alteration in stating their case for a review of existing duties.

"Members of the Australian and New Zealand section, *who may decide to make representations, are asked kindly to notify the chamber of their intention to do so, and at the same time to indicate the lines which these representations will take. If it is then found that other members dealing in similar goods are contemplating addressing the New Zealand authorities, steps will, if necessary, be taken to arrange a conference between them with a view to putting forward agreed representations."
