WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.
NEW LYNN. I There was a good attendance at thi . April meeting of the Women's Institute [ Mrs. Goldstone presided in the absenci ■ of the president. An amusing roll-cal ; was a feature of the afternoon. Misi Sutherland gave an interesting demon stration of needlework of many kinds from the finest linen to coarse canvas anc woolwork. The monthly competition foi the best vase of flowers was won bj Mrs. McGillivray 1, Mrs. White 2, anc Mrs. Higgs 3. Mrs. D'Esterre and Mrs. Ransich were hostesses for the afternoon KAIPARA FLATS. The usual monthly meeting was held on Wednesday, April 5. Mrs. Saba presided, and welcomed visitors from Warkworth and Matakana. Letters of thanks were read from the library committee and the school picnic committee for donations of £6 (for books) and £3 respectively. A competition to detect the contents of a number of sealed paper packets by touch only resulted in a tie between Mrs. Hudson and Mrs. Coley. Mrs. A. Hoke, of Matakana, gave a demonstration of macrame work, and was accorded a vote of thanks. The roll-call was for the best labour-saving device in the home. Hostesses were Mesdames Hawkings and A. Hughes. ARATORO. In March Miss Lewis, of Titirangi, gave a very interesting demonstration on the spinning wheel, and gave a talk on wool and also showed many thrift articles; her visit was very much appreciated. The April meeting was well attended, six new members being enrolled. The roll call, "What can I do to improve our institute?" gave some good suggestions. A large number of beautifully made articles were entered in the flour bag competition, which was won by a handsome bedspread made by Mrs. G. Miller. The hostesses, the Misses Dobson, Bolt, Bremner and L. Jones, served afternoon tea, HINUERA. The Hinuera Women's Institute held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, when Mrs. Hammond presided. There was a record attendance and during the day seven new members were enrolled, bringing the membership up to 40. An address was given by Dr. D. R. Abernethy on cancer and its prevention. The lecture was greatly appreciated by members. A produce stall did brisk business and good returns were secured by both members and the institute. A crochet rug was exhibited by Miss Hughes, and much admired. Several members had made rapid progress following Miss Wilson's demonstration of crochet work last month. The hostesses were Mesdames Dawson, Hollis and Dunsford.
