EFFORT TO REDUCE COSTS,

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

DUNEDIN, this day.

Now that the Byrd expedition has heen assured of its meat, coal, and oil supplies more should shortly be heard of the second trip" to the Antarctic.

The supply officer has advised the expedition's local agents that an oil company has agreed to transport all the gasoline and oil in its own tanker to X>unedin.

"You will readily understand our desire to provide refrigerating facilities, as we are endeavouring to have all supplies requiring refrigerating shipped directly to New Zealand, where they can bo taken care of pending our arrival," he adds.

"Admiral Byrd," the letter continues, "points out the great necessity of cutting the cost of this undertaking to a minimum, and in view of past experience we are quite confident you will do your utmost to co-operate with us. Several members of the old expedition are looking forward to the day when they will again have the pleasure of seeing you and your pleasant country."

The expedition will leave the United States about the latter part of September, 1933, and will make its base, as on the previous occasion, at Duncdin.
