NATIVE LANDS.
RATING PROBLEMS.
COMMITTEE APPOINTED.
REQUEST BY EOCAE BODIES,
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
An important development, having an ultimate bearing on local body finance, is the announcement by the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, that, in accordance with the statement he made in the House last session, a committee had been set up to inquire into matters relating to the rating of native lands.
This inquiry has bec'h asked for by several local bodies, who were having much difficulty with their finances by reason of the nonpayment of native rates. • A committee of three has therefore been appointed, the Hon. A. D. McLeod, M.P., being chairman, having associated with him Chief Judge It. N. Jones, of the Native Affairs Department, and Mr. J. H. Reid, chairman of the Opotiki County Council.
It is hoped, states the Prime Minister,
that as a result of the committee's investigations and recommendations, these matters of the rating of native lands, and of the collection of native rates, will be placed on a more satisfactory basis.
