DRASTIC ECONOMIES.
WAIRAU M.P.'S SUGGESTIONS
WOULD WORK FOE NOTHING,
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
Almost at the last moment prior to the recent adjournment of Parliament, Mr. E. V. Healy, M.P. for Wairau, caused astonishment and amusement by tabling a question suggesting serious eelf-denial for himself and his colleagues, and drastic economics for other people. He asked that immediate consideration be given to the following:— (1) Making the maximum salary for any State official £500.
(2) Making £300 the maximum superannuation any pensioned State servant
may draw. (3) Making the position of members of Parliament honorary.
(4) Reducing by one-half the grant to Massey College. (5) Amalgamating many State Departments. (0) Cancelling leases of private premises used, for Government business, and using many of the rooms in Parliament Building for housing these Departments' businesses. Cabinet apparently has not yet recovered from its astonishment, for no official answer has yet been prepared to be included in Hansard in reply to Mr. Healy's catalogue of economies.
