TRANSPORT TO SCHOOL.
THE THREE-MILE LIMIT. NO EXCEPTION FOR NORTHCOTE. - The protest of the -Birkdale School Committee against the withdrawal _of conveyance allowance to children living between 14 and 3 miles from the Northcote District High School was the subject of a communication from the Education Department to the Auckland Board this morning. The Department stated that the position of the Dominion's finances made avoidance of unnecessary expenditure imperative and that it would be inconsistent to continue conveyance of children to Northcote from within the three-mile limit while strictly enforcing the distance limit elsewhere in the Dominion. The Department emphasised that it was not quibbling over a small expenditure in the Northcote case, but that it desired to remove a precedent which made it difficult to deal with objections to enforcement of ordinary distance limits elsewhere.-, - -
