MORTGAGE RELIEF.
WORKING SMOOTHLY.
NO NEED OF JUDGE.
DIFFICULTIES ADJUSTED.
(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")
WELLINGTON, this day.
The early appointment of a new judge to deal exclusively with applications under the legislation affording relief to mortgagors and tenants is unlikely, according to the views expressed in official circles.
It is understood that before the Government seriously considered the proposals made in this connection, evidence of greater urgency than exists for such an appointment will require to be presented. It is pointed out that so far the administration of the legislation has worked smoothly and that valuable services are being performed by the various adjustment commissions which, as a result of conferences and experience, have travelled a good distance along the road to uniformity. They have been the means of redressing many difficulties and misunderstandings. Against the- suggestion that a temporary judge should be appointed to .deal with all cases coming before the court is advanced the argument that such an arrangement might easily have the effect of retarding the hearing of applications, and piling up arrears, which is- net the result when the services of the entire judiciary are being called upon in this connection. The experience of the Arbitration Court is recalled.
Another point made relates to the additional expense involved at a time when' the Government's economy programme insists upon the conservation of every shilling. From inquiries in appropriate quarters it is established that the Government does not, at present, at all events, intend' to appoint an additional judge for the purpose mentioned.
