QUEEN ST. LIGHTING.

REPORT BY ENGINEER. SCOPE FOR IMPROVEMENT. A request by the City Central Progress League that immediate attention be given to what was termed "the inadequacy of the lighting of Queen Street" was before the City Council last night. The city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, reported that Queen Street was one of the first stress in which electric lighting was installed over 20 years ago. While improvements had been effected to some of the lamps, a more modern type of lamp might be substituted for many of the older types that still existed. In 1928 a scheme for the general improvement of the lighting of Queen Street was submitted to the council, but owing to the cost it was not adopted. There was no doubt that a considerable improvement could be effected if funds were available, but he was not prepared to recommend the council to authorise a. complete new installation. It was his intention to effect some further improvements within the limit of the street lighting allocation, but before proceeding with this he was awaiting a report from the general manager of the Auckland Electric Power Board respecting the cost of replacing the existing lamps with a more modern type. The section of Queen Street from Street to Karangahape Road was the portion that should first receive attention, and it was anticipated that it would be possible, in connection with the improvements already authorised by the council, to effect some improvement in that section. The question was referred to the Works Committee.
