DISTILLERS' PLAINT.
Government Taxing Whisky Out of Existence. LOSS TO EXCHEQUER. (Received 0.30 a.m.) LONDON", February 19. Whisky distillers are seeking Government relief from the exorbitant duties on spirits. An Irish firm has written to members of Parliament emphasising the fact that whisky is being taxed out of existence. It says that whereas the duties contributed 19 per cenC of the total revenue in 1895-96, since then they have steadily fallen to 4.3 per cent. Therefore the increased duties have been an utter failure from the standpoint of the Exchequer. Wholesome, matured, whisky has been placed out of the reach of the working classes, say the writers, and its place has been filled with foreign and colonial wines and highly fortified crude spirits.
