ESPIONAGE TRIAL.

French Official Sentenced in Italy. WORK IN THE BALKANS. ROME, February 5. One of the most remarkable espionage trials since the war resulted in Professor Charles Eydoux, 'head of the French Military Academy (Ecole Poly technique) being sentenced to live years' imprisonment and his secretary, Miss Bonneford, to three years, for espionage on the frontier between Italy and Yugoslavia. Under the recent amnesty Professor Eydoux's sentence has been reduced to two years and Miss Bonneford has been released. '> . The case was heard by a special tribunal. The courtroom was lined by Black Shirts with fixed bayonets. The prosecutor declared that Professor Eydoux visited Italy almost every year and provided foreigners with valuable information about Italy's "modest" war preparations. The trial aroused intense interest owing to the recent publicity regarding military preparations on both sides of the Yugoslavian frontier.
