FOUGHT IN PUBLIC.

YOUNG BUTCHERS FINED.

"WE ARE NOW FRIENDS."

Two butchers employed at Westfield, Joseph Davis (23) and Gerald Mahoney (19), appeared before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., at the Otahuhu Magistrate's Court to-day, charged with fighting. Both pleaded guilty. Sergeant J. Caliill said that on January 16 defendants fought in a paddock just off the Great South Road. A crowd of spectators gathered, and cars on the road'etopped to watch the fight. He asked for a substantial penalty,' as there was a good deal of trouble between unionists and free labourers, and such occurrences did not improve matters.

Mr. Levien: Are these men unionists? Sergeant Caliill: No, both men are free labourers.

Mr. Levien: This is a variation in these troubles.

Davis said that Mahoney called him names during working hours. In order not to lose their employment they decided to wait until after working hours before settling their differences.

Mr. Levien: Are they settled now? Davis: So far as I am concerned, Mahoney is the better man, and we are now friends.

Both accused were convicted and fined 40/ with costs. They were given two weeks in which to pay.
