Paganelli was backing out of the barrier when the tapes were released in the Suburban Handicap, and when he moved off he was at the rear of the field. He made up nothing of his leeway the first couple of furlongs. In the straight he finished on to get third. Had he jumped off with the others he must have been much closer to the winner. MADE THE DIFFERENCE. Jumping sideways when the barrier lifted in the Wynyard Plate probably cost King's Knave the race, as he put himself in a position he would not have been in had he gone out straight. He had every chance in the straight, but could not quite get to Broken Rule; who beat him by a neck. Both are hacks a littie above the ; average and they would probably win oyer short distances in open company in the class at present racing in Auckland. ALL THE WAY. The Tarquin gelding. Hampton Park, made short work of the Suburban Handicap field. He was always up in the lead with Miss Lorraine and Whakapara, but before reaching the home turn Hampton Park drew out clear, and he came away to score rather easily. The chestnut has always been a very speedy horse, but he has invariably failed to run on, although he won two races at Te Kuiti last autumn. Yesterday he showed no signs of tiring. CONSISTENT THESPIS. Thespis, who has been showing good form in moderate company, proved too good for his opponents in the Waiwera High-weight, in which he carried the solid weight of 11.2, and ran the 11 furlongs 40 yards in 2.24 2-5, or one-fifth of a second faster than Gay Idea registered to win the Cup the first day. It was a good performance on the part of Thespis, and with the lighter weight he will receive in other but high-weight handicaps he should do well. WON EASILY. Though the decision in favour of Roman Mascot in the Moana Handicap was- half a length the win was a very easy one, and had McTavish given the Lucullus filly a kick she would have drawn right away. On the first day .she failed to get in the money, but several ticked her off to do better yesterday, and they were rewarded with a handy dividend. She was always handy to the two leaders, Top Light and Foulwind, and, once in the straight, she came along and won on the bit. A LITTLE UNLUCKY. Arawa Rose was a shade unlucky in the Moana Handicap. She drew No. 1 at the barrier, but was just a trifle slow to move, with the result that she was soon cut off and in a bad position on the fence. She could not get a run till halfway down the straight, and, under the circumstances, did well to finish third only a neck away from the second horse, Foulwind, who had been out in the lead all the way. _ Arawa Rose should not be long in winning a maiden event. She is very small, and her size will always be against her. A BODY BLOW. The defeat of Master Brierly in the Takapuna J.C. Handicap was a heavy blow dealt to backers, and not only did he fail to win, but he never looked like being in the picture, and with three furlongs fone Voitre was hard at him trying to eep somewhere near the leading division. He did make a bit of a run half a mile from home, but it was short lived, and he was always a well-beaten horse. There is not a great deal of Master Brierly, and being anything but a good beginner, lie is not an easy horse to ride. A ONE-HORSE RACE. Going into the lead at barrier rise, Eager Eose made a one-horse race of the Takapuna J.C. Handicap and she was always bowling along on her own in front. Jalldy Karo and Gay Idea tried to move up to her crossing the top, but Baker was sitting still on Eager Kose and she went away again without any trouble. At the end she had an advantage of two and a half lengths over M el- ry Damon, who finished on well to beat a very tired lot of horses. It was no disgrace for the Gisborne horse to go under to Eager Eose, as the latter carried only 7.0 and was receiving 341b from the top weight. A CLOSE FINISH. The best finish at the meeting was in the Hobson Handicap, when Gay Sheila, King Mestor and Deputy Ruler flashed past the judge so close that only the man in the box could decide. King Mestor actually jumped out first, but he could not hold the position, and he was headed by Gay Sheila and Deputy Ruler, Voitre being busy on King Mestor boosting him along to try to hold a position on the fence behind the leaders. , Half-way down the straight Gay Sheila and Deputy Ruler were having a royal struggle, when Voitre joined in with Kinj? Mestor, and they flashed past the post almost in line. Mr. E. -B. Lusk declared a dead-heat between Gay Sheila and King Mestor, with Deputy Kuler a neck away. King Mestor finished on particularly well, as he was giving the leaders a couple of lengths at the home turn.
