CORNWELL CUP.
FIRST RACE SAILED. LTTTELTON CREWS SUCCESS. AUCKLAXDERS FINISH THIRD. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Hundreds of spectators witnessed the first Corn-well Cup race at Lyttelton today, and the utmost excitement prevailed when, after a hard tussle, first against Wellington and later against Christchurch, the defending crew for Lyttelton, R. Hendry and S. Sillars, secured the first victory of the series, winning by lm Bs. The course was intended to be windward and leeward, tout vagaries of the wind made it impossible to define it as such. AIL the boats got away to a good start, Lyttelton leading. Lyttelton rounded the first mark 20s ahead of Wellington, with Auckland, Porirua, Christchurch, Dunedin, Manukau, and Plimmerton following in that order. Porirua overtook Auckland and went into third position, and Christchurch later beat Auckland for fourth place. Off Sticking Point, Wellington assumed the lead, Lyttelton being second, Porirua third, and Christchurch fourth. Lyttelton soon went to the front again. Wellington later picked up a south-easterly slant, which took it into the lead, but Lyttelton rounded the mark right on Wellington's 6tern, with Auckland, Porirua, Christchurch, and Manukau close up. Lyttelton went to the front. Wellington had just sheeted its spinnaker home when, owing to mishandling, the sail dropped into the water. The wind was changeable, and off Officers' Point the order was Lyttelton, Christchurch, Auckland, and Porirua, with the others well strung out. Plimmerton retired. A light easterly provided a run to the finishing line, all carrying spinnakers. The finish was:—Lyttelton, 4h 18m 16s; Christchurch, 4h 19m 245; Auckland, 4h 21m 2s; Porirua, 4h 23m ss; Wellington, 4h 28m 50s; Manukau, 4h 36m 20s; Dunedin, 4h
