PAYMENT OF RATES.
"EMINENTLY SATISFACTORY."
POSITION IN ONE TREE HILL.
The payment of rates in the Ono Tree Hill Borough was described by the Mayor, Mr. L J. Goldstine, at the council meeting last evening, as eminently satisfactory. A return made by the town clerk, Mr. A. Leese, showed that up till yesterday £19,413 out of a levy of £24,234 for ordinary rates, had been paid, representing just over 80 per cent. At the same date last year 59 per cent had been paid, but on February 9, after the last day for the imposition of the 10 per cent penalty, 85 per cent had been collected. The total municipal rates outstanding, including current rates and arrears, totalled £6725, of which at least £1000 was due on Crown properties, and on present indications was not recoverable. Water rates to the extenjfc of £991 were still to be paid, making a total of all rates outstanding £7575.
A tribute was paid by the Mayor to the personal efforts of the town cl»rk in inducing ratepayers to meet their obligations, and a, motion was passed in appreciation.
