SUSTENANCE WANTED
REQUEST TO GOVERNMENT.
FEELING AT GREYMOUTH.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
GREYMOUTH, Wednesday.
A large public meeting representing local bodies and unemployed, held in the Town TTfl.ll to-night, protested against the inadequacy of relief allocations. The speakers included the Mayors of Greymouth, Runanga and Brunner, the chairman of the Cobden Town Board and representatives of the county and unemployed! and Labour organisations. The following resolution was proposed; "That this meeting strongly protests against the inadequate.. relief money in this district, and urges th|i board to make an immediate increase; also that the Minister be asked to place Greymouth in the same category as the main centres for relief purposes, as the cost of living is far greater here than in the cities; also that the Minister _be asked to review all schemes with a view to removing the hardship of stand-down or short weeks, but tips not to be done at the expense of the other three weeks." An amendment, however, was carried as follows: "That this meeting make a definite request to the Government at once to cancel all relief work, and in lieu thereof to pay sustenance as provided by the Unemployment Act."
