CUP DAY FORM.

NOTES ON RACING. SOME EXCITING FINISHES. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star."') WELLINGTON, Thursday. Beau Gallante was a .strong favourite for the Trentham High-weight Handicap, and his backers were never uneasy. He and Clangor were in front after three furlongs, and a little further on had a lead of several lengths, Monastic, Palace and Nightguard heading the others. Clangor collapsed in the straight, Beau Gallante winning easily by over a length. Monastic looked like being second, but Cape Fair headed him on the post. Chief Line, Saltpot and Golden Horn headed the others. The winner hung out badly, but apart from this won like a good horse. Nightguard failed to run on. Monastic was doing good work in the straight. This made Beau Gallante's third win on end.

Diatomous Unplaced. Diatomous, after giving trouble at the barrier, began smartly in the Wellington Stakes, Good Hunting, Princess Doreen, Midinette, Lack and Fracas following him to the course proper. Diatomous was headed by Midinette half a furlong from thg post. Guarantee, who was badly placed in the early stages, then came with a great rush, beating Midinette by a neck. Lack hung on for third, with Inflation, Diatomous and Good Hunting next. Had he begun decently Guarantee would have won easily. His performance was impressive from the position he occupied a furlong from home. Diatomous disappointed, as did also Princess Doreen, both collapsing in the final stages. Fracas, from the outside -position, was prominent to the straight and then retired. A Surprise.

The Apprentice's Plate, with a field of 19, was a fine race. Purse and Glenvane were soon out clear with Niggerhead next. They ran without further change to the straight, with Beaconsfield, Azalea and Farmer also prominent. Once in a line for home the field closed up. Niggerhead drew out inside the distance, but Broken Rule caught him in the last stride. Farmer finished strongly a length away. Aiguille, Azalea, Beaconsfield, Eminent and Chock Say were all in the next bunch. Argentic, on the rails, missed the jump out and never looked dangerous. The winner returned a big dividend. Porotitl Wins Well. Porotiti, a hot favourite for the Fitzherbert Handicap, won decisively. Catalogue, Quebec and Bon Kapide were prominent early, but Lady Nan and Porotiti led them to the course proper with Pegged Exchange handy. The leaders bunched at the distance, but Porotiti showed superior stamina and always looked the wirner. Pegged Exchange stuck on well, just beating Lady Nan for second. Sweet Agnes began slowly but finished very fast for fourth place. Bon Kapide and Catalogue next. The Cup. The Wellington Cup provided a thrilling finish. Princess Argosy, Great Star and Refresher were the early leaders, with Gold Trail, Fiji, Jaloux and Red Heckle heading others, with Retract and Red Sun last. Great Star dropped back a little, Princess Argrosy and Refresher still showing the way to the home turn,_ where Royal Artist moved up on the rails, and
