WATER FOR OTAHUHU.

POOR RESULTS FROM BORING. FURTHER TEST TO BE MADE. Tie question of an additional water supply, or a supply to supersede the present supply of water, which is excessively hard, has been occupying the attention of the Otahuhu Borough Council for some time, and the matter was again discussed by the council last evening when the pumping engineer's report was received. The report stated that the recent results of their boring at Thompson's well was very disappointing when compared with the previous quantity pumped. During a test from December 17 to December 19 only 174,000 gallons of water had been lifted, an average of 4000 per hour. In reply to a question from Mr. F. W. Grey, the Mayor, Mr. H. T. Clements, said he did not know how much had been spent on this well, but it ran into hundreds of pounds. Mr. Grey: I have been sceptical from the beginning, and this result does not fit in with the glowing accounts given to us by the water diviner. I don't think we should spend any more money on this well. If we Could get 10,000 gallons per hour it might be of some use to us. The Mayor: The well was 84ft deep when this council began operations, and we have gone down to 97ft. We are still going through solid stone. When we reach the mud I think it will be time to quit. This well means so much to us that we should persevere. I admit we cannot go on indefinitely, and I would advise the council to test the stone to see how much further down the clay lies. If this fails, we must" do something more. Mr. Grey suggested that a bore should be put down at a point suggested by the pumping engineer. It was finally decided to make a further test of Thompson's well, and that a report of progress and total cost be submitted to the next council meeting.
