(Prom Our Own Correspondent.)

CLEVEDON, this day.

An old resident of Clevedon, Mr. Robert Couldrey, died on December 20, aged 94 years. It was claimed that Mr. Couldrey was probably the oldest shoemaker in the world. He worked at his trade until a few months ago. He was born in Berkshire, England, and came to New Zealand with his wife and a. young daughter ia the sailing ship Warwick in 1873. When the family arrived at Auckland the province was experiencing a slight depression, the aftermath of" the Maori War. Mr. Couldrey was unable to obtain work at his trade. He became a letter carrier at Auckland for a number of years. About 1880 Mr. Couldrey took his family to Clevedon, and opened a bookmaker's shop. He became ill suddenly last Sunday. He was a very active man, and a great walker, having at times tramped from Clevedon to Auckland. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and a regular attendant at All Souls' Church. Mrs. Couldrey died about 20 years ago. Mrs. T. Wallis and Mrs. E. H. Dawe, of Clevedon, are daughters.
