HAWKER CHARGED.

"REFERENCE" FROM POLICE. ON TRAIN WITHOUT TICKET. When Givau Ganesh, an Indiau hawker, aged 31, was found on the Main Trunk express yesterday travelling without a ticket, lie told the guard that when he got to Auckland, the police would give him a reference. Gauesh's idea of a reference was strange. The Indian appeared before Mr. W. E. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court thie morning charged with being an incorrigible rogue and with travelling on a train between Wellington and Auckland without paying his fare, £1' 17/ S. Constable Edwards said the guard of the train found him asleep in a lavatory at Palmerstoii North. He had known accused for the past ten years, and he had never done any work during that time. He had spent nine years in gaol since 1921. Another constable described Ganesh as a "pest" and a nuisance. When he got drunk he wanted to fight. Mr. Noble (who appeared for accused: Give a dog a bad name—then hang him. Detective Sergeant Kelly said accused had always been a drinker, and now descended to methylated spirits. He threw off afc women round the back streets and often frightened them. He was an unfortunate blot on the city. The only time he worked was when he was forced to in prison. "I don't know that I can <?ay anything in his favour after hearing that tirade of abuse," said Mr. Noble. Accused was remanded until tomorrow on both charges.
