OPIUM SEIZED.
CHINESE ARRESTED. CHARGED WITH IMPORTING. DRUG FOUNI> IN WALL. Police officers seized a quantity of prepared, opium when they arrested a Chinese in Grey Avenue last evening. Following the arrest, a search "was made of the premises where accused had been living, and more opium was found hidden in a wall. The police parly —Detective-Sergeant llcHugh, Detective Brady, Sergeant Thompson and Constable Chalcraft— went to Grey Avenue about 8.30. They watched act-used for a time and saw him go into a shop where there were a number of other Chinese. They waited near the door for him to come out, and ten minutes later, when he walked out into their arms, he was arrested and taken to the, police station. He was found to be in possession of a number.of packets of opium. Returning to the shop with the Chinese, the police made an hour's search of the premises an-d in the basement at the back, they found a tobacco tin containing packets of opium hidden behind » loose brick in the wall. Accused In Court. This morning the arrested man, Allan Lum On, a fruiterer, aged 32, appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court, charged with importing prepared opium and with having in his possession 21 packets of prepared opium. Mr. J. J- Sullivan appeared for accused and obtained a remand until next Tuesday. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said ae.used had beeii selling the opium in small packets for 5/ each. There were three or four smokes in each packet. Jlr. J. Melntoshj Collector of Customs, mentioned tha' tho maximum penalty for importing opium was a line of £500 and imprisonment for a year. DetectivcSerf'earit Kelly eaid accused was liable to a line of £100 for being in possession of the drug.
