ROWING.

ST. GEORGE'S CLUB.

OPENING NEW BOATHOUSB.

The ofilcial opening of the St. George's Rowing Club's new boathouse and season took place on Saturday and proved a most successful function despite the somewhat unpleasant weather conditions. There was a record attendance of supporters and friends, who were welcomed by the Rev. J. G. Coats, vice-commodore. In an interesting speech punctuated with humorous items he outlined the activities in connection with the building of the new boathouse, making special reference to the ladies and gentlemen who rendered such valuable assistance.

Mr. H. W. Hudson, commodore and foundation member of the club, was called upon,

and he gave many interesting reminiscences of the club's history from the building of the first clubhouse in Mechanics' Bay, when the club's plant consisted of two whaleboats. He congratulated the members upon the fine boathouse and plant and the necessity of keeping up the traditions of the club. Mr. Hudson then hoisted the flag, declaring the boathouse and season opened, as the Mount Eden Boys' Band played , the National Anthem.

The visitors were entertained to am attractive programme that comprised trial fours, inter-club four, veterans' eight, warships' whaleboats and swimming races.

Among those present were many old members, whose records have done so much in building the club history. It was encouraging for them to see so many new members so keen on the sport of rowing. During the afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies' committee under the supervision of Mrs. D. Duncan. The afternoon's function was further enlivened with a musical programme by the Mount Eden Boys' Band. A special feature was the veterans' race in the eights, a'nd the oldtimers had an enjoyable spin in which they displayed the thorough training in rowing during their younger days.
