FIRST GRADE COMPETITION.

PARKELL AHEAD OF UNIVERSITY.

Eleven matches were played in the A grade Parnell-University tennis contest at Stanley Street on Saturday, Parnell generally showing better form than the University representatives. One brilliant exception, that of J. E. Stedman, was noticeable. He lost the first set 4—6 to McPherson's easy style of play and general lack of errors, but having got into his stride he took the next two sets 6—l, 6—3. Another excellent match was played between Walton and Brown, this being noticeable chiefly for Walton's driving and net play. Results are as follows ('Varsity names first) :—

Men's Singles.— J. E. Stedman beat McPherson, 4—6, 6—l, '6—3; Walton beat Brown, 6—l, I—6, 6—4; Bushill lost to Lamb, 5—6, 5—6 ; Wilson lost to Chalmers, 4 —6, 5—6 ; Boardman beat Litherland, 5—6, 6—4, 6—2.

Ladies' Singles.—Miss Taylor lost to Mrs. Wren, 2—6, 3—6 ; Miss Chalmers lost to Mrs. Russell, 5—6, I—6 ; Miss Colson lost to Miss Bishop, 4—6, 6—5, 2—6. Men's Doubles.^— J. E. Stedman and Wilson lost to Lamb and Boardman, 5—6, I—6. Ladles' Doubles.—Misses Gardner and Mackinnon lost to Miss Bushill and Mrs. Cooper, 6—l, 6—o. Combined Doubles.—Miss Gardner and Wilson lost to Miss Bushill and Boardman, 4—6, 6—5, I—6; Miss Mackinnon and Robins lost to Mrs. Cooper and Diamond, I —6, 6—o, 5—7; Miss Anderson and Spence lost to Miss Walker and Chalmers, 4—6, 6—l, 3—6; Denny and Miss Mclntosh beat Coates and Miss Haydon, 6—4, 5—6, 9—7;; Winston and Miss Gardner lost to Boardman and Miss Bushill, C—4, 5 —G, I—G.

Light rain stopped play several times, the result at 5.30 being Pnrnell 11 matches to University's 4, with 7 to play. THE LOWER GRADES. In the second grade Unity led University by 7 rubbers to 1 when play ceased. ■ Third Grade Results.—Hallyburton Johnstone beat Marist Old Boys, 6—4; I%ataringa led Balmoral, 6—l; Ellerslie Parish beat Unity, 7—2. Fourth Grade.—Bayfield best West End, 6—o; Vauxhall led St. Mary's, 4—3; Unity beat Te Papapa, 116 games to 98 (rubbers and sets equal) ; Ngataringa beat Kitchener Park, 7—2; Birkdalc beat Balmoral, 5—2.
