MOTOR CYCLING.

GRAND PRIX. MOTOR CYCLES AT MANGERE. / ■; : Although the list of entries was disappointing in number, the riders who competed at the Waiteraata Motor Cycle Club s grand prlx meeting at Mangere Speedway on Saturday included most of Auckland s leading motor cyclists. On • a eourso obstructed by barricades, round which the competitors had to ride, no very high speeds were expected, but some of the lap times actually were little short of what has been recorded by winners in strniglit-out races; and this despite the fact that the track was in places very bumpy, and made greasy by a light drizzle of rain. Of the three riders that started in the 350 cc. event, one. O. Brunton, riding a New Imperial, spilled in the third lap, leaving 1,. .Perry (.T.A.P.) to win easily from G. Hewlett (Velocettc). The sidecar race, with fire starters, was more interesting. M. Robinson (Royal Enfield> led for a lap. but A. Myers (Royal Enfield) passed him in the second, and in the next lap he yielded second place to W. Marett (8.5.A.). Another lnp put Marett in the lead, with Myers and Eoblnson next behind. Going through the obstacles at the end of the fifth lap Robinson's machine stalled and he lost two laps. Although he got going again, he was shortly afterwards forced to retire with a burned-out piston. Both Marett and Dale (Ariel) had to retire with clutch trouble, leaving A. Myers and A. Harry (Royal Enfield) in first and second places respectively. They were signalled off two laps short of finishing, a& the lead was too much for Harry to make

up. His engine firing perfectly, L. Perry (.T.A.P.) jumped Into the lead at the start of the open race, but when the field came into the straight- the second time B. Bray (Douglas) was leading Perry, with Forder (Norton) third. The latter came into second place in front of Perry a few laps later. After lapping Moses (Budge), who, since Brunton had fallen out, was last man. Bray had to pull up at the pits, and he lost over' a lap before he could get going again. After a few more laps Bray had to retire" permanently, while Lindesny (Budge) was put out of the race .by the breaking of his driving chain. The final laps were completed by Forder, Youren (Ariel) and Moses, who gained places in that order. The fastest time in this race was clocked, by B. Bray, who did a lap in lm 23 Js.
