CUSTOMS PROBLEM.
PREFKKENCE TO EMPIRE GOODS. At a recent meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce some of the importers asked that steps be taken to get an alteration of the Customs tariff in the direction of separating the labour content from the other charges. The Parliamentary and taxation committee recommended this morning to the council of the chamber "That on account of the intricacies involved in separating the different values as suggested, and Hie difficulty of obtaining reliable information respecting the actual labour costs in the different countries, the committee i.i of the opinion that it would be unwise for the council to approach the Government with a contemplated tariff alteration surrounded by so many obstacles, and the committee therefore recommends no action be taken." The committee's report was adopted.
