WELLINGTON WORKS.
KILLING OPERATIONS START. (By Telegraph,—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON. Wednesday. Killing was commenced to-day at both the Gear Meat Company's works and at Ngahauranga, and is progressing satisfactorily. At Ngahauranga there were over 100 applications for work on the board. Forty-two men were engaged, and the chain-gang system instituted. At first only men who had previously used the knife were put on, but later the remainder of absolutely unskilled men were eet to work. The management was pleased with the result. The dressing was not perfect, it wae stated, but was much better than was anticipated. Union labour was freely offering in other departments apart from the slaughtering.
'A number of men applied for work at the Gear Meat Company'e works, and killing is proceeding satisfactorily. About half the applicants are union men. There were sufficient hande to dispose of the yarding.
