MODERN PLAYGROUND.

EDENDALE IMPROVEMENTS. OPENING ON SATURDAY. A large area of waste ground at the Edendale School has been transformed by relief labour into an up-to-date playground, and the official opening of the ground will be performed by the Mayor of Mount Albert, Mr. W. F. Stilwell, at 3 p.m. next Saturday. Exceptionally good work been done at the school under the No. 5 scheme. The average number of men on the job has been 45, and the time taken has been a year and eight months. Simplicity is the keynote of the scheme, but the committee now claims that the grounds will compare favourably with those of any other primary school. Provision has been made for three playing fields. The largest area, comprising an acre and a half, has been set aside for the use of boys, as there is ample room for the .playing of cricket and football. The intermediate area, of one acre, will be used by the girls, and the third playground, which is guarded from the prevailing winds by shelter belts, is for the exclusive use of the infant children. The boys , and infants playgrounds are on a lower level than the -nrls , , and the two grounds are connected by means of a semi-circular ramp. Bluestone retaining walls have been built, and flowering shrubs and plants are already making good growth on the batters. The whole ground, which in the course of a few years' time should take on a really park-like appearance, is overlooked by an observatory, which contains a weather vane, rain gauge and sun dial. There is also a flagstaff.
