PRISON REBELLION.

Convicts Set Fire to Portion

Of Canadian Gaol.

THREE GUARDS INJURED.

(Received 12.30 p.m.)

MONTREAL, November 4.

Three guards were injured when a rebellion, accompanied by a fire, broke out at St. Vincent de Paul penitentiary on the Isle of Jesus, in St. Lawrence River, nine miles from here, on Friday. A negro named Croesley led four others in an attack on three guards in the tailor shop. Knives and clubs, obtained in some mysterious fashion, were used. The guards were injured when they were rushed and also suffered severe burns.

After attacking the guards the prisoners set the workhouse on fire and it was destroyed. A concerted effort at the gaol to effect escape was quelled and the guards eventually succeeded in getting all the prisoners in their cells. More than 1000 are in the prison. Several of the inmates burns. One convict was rescued unconscious by a fireman from a cell on the upper floor of the burning workshop.
