The first pair to tee off at 9 o'clock comprised C. A.v.. Seymour and J> A. Clements. Shaw left with.D..C. C^lins — the former ■ Dominion cricket , captain— twenty minutes ■ later;. Arthur Duncan (who was only a stroke- behind Shaw yesterday, despite the fact that lie is over sixty) did not get away until .10115, hie partner being C/ H; Stephenson.' 'E.'.J. Moss and H. A v Black,' who tied for third place on Friday, wfent out at 10 ,o'clock and 10.25 respectively, the .former with J. P. Mortland (Taihape), who did so well in the amateur championship at Shirley in October last year, and the latter with G. W. Melvin. Shaw strengthened his position by another solid round of 72. He made the outward journey in 35, stopping on the lip of the fifth hole for a two, and getting an "eagle" 3 at the seventh (a bogey 5 and par 4 hole). Two beautiful woods at the eighth (536 yds), the longest hole on the course', left hnri 50yds from the pin, and holding an lift putt' to, he got a "birdie" 4. At the first three holes coming home he was a bit strong with seconds, but retrieved with -one putt, except at .the eleventh. At the. thirteenth lie slipped a stroke.-and made his score one over fours. His putting let him down at the next two holes .(bogey threes), and lie: topk <4 at each. "Chipping" dead at the sixteenth Shaw obtained a three. He missed the opportunity of scoring another three, at the eighteenth by failing to hole a 3ft putt, but completed the round in even fours. His tally fop three rounds is 218. The early pjaycrd had all the bast of the conditions, as the wind increased at times to the force of a gale, accompanied by rain. .Shaw was one of the fortunate ones, and also Syme, whose 71 is likely to be the best of the mornirig, tieing with Harold Black ami Silk (71 yesterday) for the best round of the meeting to date. Douglas Moves Up. Douglas • played another steady round, and his' 72 leaves' him in third place, as both Harold Black and Moss had poor rounds. Douglas was,out in 37, with three fives, and threes at the, one-shot, holes. Coming home he picked up a stroke from bogey at the tenth and twelfth, and did not make a mistake till the fifteenth, the scene of his previous downfall. The wind made it eitremely' difficult to stop on this green, even with a niblick, and Douglas, being too strong, had to concede a penalty, but he got down with a chip and a putt for 4. A three at .the sixteenth regained him the. lost, stroke, and after trickling into the seventeenth bunker with Ills second shot to take 5, he finished with a four. Moss, who commenced the third round two strokes behind Shaw, lost his chance this morning by ' playing a poor round of 82.. His second - shots to the green with the following wind were just too strong, and he had just the element of ill-fortune for several to trickle over .the back or side of the green into "the buiiker. He was out in 39 with three fives. On reaching the fifteenth he had had three inoro fives, and failing to reach the fifteenth green he was trapped in a hazard, and did not recover with his second shot, taking a six.- He sliced his tee shot into a creek at the sixteenth — another five—and also slipped another stroke at the eighteenth. He was home in 43. Arthur Duncan Brilliant. Brilliant golf was played by Arthur Duncan, whose round in 73 maintained him in second place. He played the first nine holes in 36, which included no less than five threes, at the second, third, fifth, seventh and ninth holes, two bogeys, twp: "birdies,";.'.and an; "eagle"i at.,the seventh (the 444 yds hole bogey with five). The long eighth cost "him six-when he was short with his approach. Coming: hpme he dropped a stroke at the eleventh and fifteenth, but regained one at the "eighteenth with a perfect three.
