THEFT OF CLUB FUNDS.
SECRETARY SENT TO PRISON.

WELLINGTON, Friday.
A sentence of six months' imprisonment with hard labour was imposed by the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, in the Supreme Court to-day on Ernest John McDonald, aged 34, a clerk, who was found guilty of theft of £130, the funds of the Wayside Club, an institution supported by subscriptions, for providing food and amenities for the unemployed. McDonald was secretary of tho club. He said he had not received a respectable week's salary for two years and a half. The money had been raised by his own efforts. He had a wife and four children to support. The Chief Justice, in passing sentence, said he was giving full effect to the jury's recommendation to leniency.
