FURKERT FAREWELLED. PRESENTATIONS BY STAFF. MR. COATES' WARM TRIBUTE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. A farewell ceremony to Mr. P. W. Furkert, who has retired from the position of Under-Secretary and Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department, was held to-day. Members of the head office staff, together with Ministers, former Ministers, and representatives of other branches were present. The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coatee, on behalf of the staff throughout the Dominion, presented Mr. Furkert with a grandfather clock, a pocket wallet, a fountain pen, and a propelling pencil. Mr. Coates paid an eloquent tribute to Mr. Furkert's services. Mr. Coates announced to-day that Mr. C. J. McKenzie, assistant engineer-in-chief to the Public Works Department, has been appointed to succeed Mr. Furkert. His position will be that of Under-Secretary of Public Works, and in addition he will in the meantime carry out the duties of cngineer-in-chief.
