There is fine weather and a good attendance for the opening of the Auckland Racing Club's spring meeting at Ellerslie, which terminates on Monday. The track is in first-class condition.
Prince of Orange beat Patutahi in the Trial Hurdles, in which the favourite failed to pay a dividend.
Not only did Pillow Fight go down to Gold Trail (sixth in order of betting) in the Guineas, but the winner's margin was two lengths and a half.
Golden Wings and Exaggeration paid the dividends in the Shorts Handicap.
Royal Artist was the victor in the Mitchelson Cup, the minor places being filled by Great Emblem and View Halloo.
