TROTTING.

NEW ZEALAND CUP. DECIDED NEXT TUESDAY. ROYAL SILK THE FAVOURITE. Two years ago the New Zealand Trotting Cup was the richest turf event decided in New Zealand, but the depression brought about a drastic curtailment in the stake, atid from £4000 it has been reduced to £1600. Next week the event will be decided in one run, and not in divisions and heats, and when all is said the straightout decision is perhaps to be preferred.

Of the dozen brilliant pacers originally entered all stand their ground, but there seems to be an impression abroad that Red Shadow may not line up on Tuesday, and that J. Bryce will be content to rely upon Royal Silk. Red Shadow is only a young horse and there is plenty of racing ahead of him, and if Royal Silk is the better of the pair at the moment it may not be wise to ask Red Shadow to undertake a severe race like the Cup. On the other hand, the colt could be started to ensure a solid pace being set, which would make the job of Harold Logan, handicapped on 60yds, one that only an out-and-out champion could hope to accomplish. The only horses on the limit, 4.26, are Royal Silk and Regal Voyage, and though the latter is a smart pacer she should be held safe by Royal Silk, who is a class horse over any distance. Free Advice and Glenrossie, on 12yds, do not look like beating Royal Silk, but Rollo, .on the same mark, is a brilliant stayer, but not too Reliable at the barrier. Kohara does not appear to have any chance, but the same cannot be said of Kingcraft. This is one of the fastest pacers in the Dominion, and though at one time he was not regarded as a true stayer, it is said his trainer, D. Withers, is very confident of winning the Cup with Kingcraft, who Will be driven by F. G. Holmes, as Withers has to drive his other candidate Regal Voyage. Another great pacer is Roi l'Or, handicapped on 24yds. At his best he 1 would be the hardest to beat, as he can both go fast and stay. Harold Logan is set a stiff task to overtake Royal Silk and Kingcraft. It is extremely doubtful if the champion will head Royal Silk off. IN GREAT FORM. ®. N. Kennerley has gone South with Peter Pirate and Real Girl and when they left Auckland both pacers were at the top of their form. Each has raced consistently well for some months past, and with ordinary luck they should earn enough at Addington to pay the expenses of the trip. Peter Pirate is a real good horse now and he may win a good stake at the meeting, as he is both sprinting fast and staying well.
