V.R.C. MEETING., THE THIRD DAY. OAKS TO PROTEA. CHATHAM WINS STAKES. MELBOURNE, November 3. The weather was fine for the third day of the Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington to-day and there was a good attendance. The unfancied Panoramic had a comfortable win in the Maiden Plate. She is owned and trained by G. Tantram, who also trains The Cracksman, winner of the Cup Steeplechase on Tuesday. Although interfered with at the start Lisburn finished brilliantly to win the Byron Moore Stakes, for two-year-olds. This was the fourth win at the meeting for the veteran trainer, J. Scobie. The Night Raid colt Blixten was second. Chatham made amends for his Cantala Stakes failure by a decisive victory in" the Linlithgow Stakes, which he also won last vear. The rider, J. Munro, had won twice previously with Amounis. Kuvera scored his first win of the season in the Carnival Handicap. He was last at the turn and finished brilliantly. His trainer, George Price, and rider, M. McCarten, are former New Zealanders. The consistent Protea, winner of the Wakeful Stakes last Saturday, recorded a comfortable success in the Oaks Stakes. It was the first time her rider, G. Newton, had had a mount in the Oaks. The runnerup, Segati, was also second in the Caulfield Cup. Protea cost 80 guineas as a yearling. Nokila was prominent early and won the Veteran Stakes nicely. It was his most important success to date. The New Zealander Havering finished well into third place and was a trifle unlucky.
